Some Hydroxycut Weight-Loss Products Causing Liver Damage, Death

Lovate Sciences, a manufacturer of Hydroxycut, has agreed to a recall of Hydroxycut products because of reports of liver damage and death. One report of death from Hydroxycut has been reported by the FDA.

Not all Hydroxycut products are associated with liver damage. So far, 23 reports of liver injury, causing elevated liver enzymes have been reported.

The list of Hydroxycut products that Lovate Sciences is recalling include:

Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets

If you have used any of the above Hydroxycut products, and experience symptoms that might indicate liver damage, notify your physician. Symptoms of liver injury or damage include yellowing of the eyes, and skin, dark urine, abdominal pain, nausea, weakness, and small bruises from unknown cause, bleeding, itching and loss of appetite.

Hydroxycut cleanse and Hoodia, also used for weight loss are not affected by the recall. The FDA has not determined which ingredients in the Hydroxycut products are responsible for liver damage. The Hydroxycut products causing liver damage and one death contain herbal ingredients, and it may be the combination that affects the liver adversely. The Hydroxycut products were apparently used as directed.

Hydroxycut products have also caused severe muscle damage, known as rhabomyolysis, which can lead to kidney failure and death.

If you are a healthcare provider, the FDA is asking that you report any Hydroxycut side effects to www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm, or by phone at 800-FDA-1088. You can also fax an adverse event report associated with Hydroxycut products to 800-FDA-0178.
